Machine shops use various machining centers to machine metal parts. The coolant is used to keep the cutting tool cool and to flush away machined chips during machining operations. Over time, coolant gets contaminated with cutting chips and organic material causing the coolant to grow bacteria causing a rotten egg smell. There is no quick, efficient, and affordable way to clean, and scent-neutralize the coolant. The inability to clean the coolant results in continued bacteria growth a distinctly unpleasant odor, and a frequent need to replace coolant at a high replacement cost.

​Big Sky Decon has specifically engineered the Coolant Decontamination Unit (CDU) to perform various functions such as skimming, decontaminating, eliminating odors, and maintaining coolant for a wide range of machines, including mills, lathes, drill presses, saws, and more. The CDU saves time and money by eliminating the need for extensive machine cleaning, coolant replacement, and the expense of outsourcing the removal of old coolant from your facility. Big Sky Decon’s Coolant Decontamination Unit addresses the problem by neutralizing bacteria and cleaning the coolant, therefore extending coolant life and eliminating the smell caused by contaminated coolant.

To begin the process, coolant is pumped from the machine's reservoir into the CDU, allowing for the separation and external containment of any oil that may be mixed with the coolant, if necessary. The coolant continuously cycles through the CDU system and is then returned to the machine's reservoir. Before it is reintroduced, the coolant undergoes UVC light exposure within the CDU, effectively eliminating bacteria that cause unwanted odors in the machine coolant. The CDU, constructed with durable stainless steel, features a manual skimmer timer, an On/Off switch for the UV Lights, and an external oil collection jar with a coolant return hose. When switched off, the CDU automatically drains the coolant back into the reservoir. Additionally, the CDU is conveniently equipped with a rolling stand, enabling easy mobility from one machine to another.
